Where Did Halloween Come From

About 2000 years ago in the area which today is Northern France, England, Scotland and Ireland, lived the Celts. Their festival of Samhain is where the traditions of Halloween originated.

November 1, the beginning of their new year marked the end of summer and the harvest. The dark and cold winter was coming. This time of year was associated with death.

Beliefes was that on the night before the new year(October 31) the gates, between the world of the living and the world of the dead, opened. On this night it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to our world.

The night of October 31 is when they celebrated Samhain, were they sacrified crops and animals to the Celtic gods. This for the gods to protect them against the trouble caused by the dead and prevent them from damaging their crops.

Celts also thought that the precense of the spirits of the dead made it easier for the celtic priests to predict the future. Since the Celts depended entirely on the natural world these predictions were a source of comfort and direction during the winter.

To mark the day of Samhain the priests build huge bonfires for people to gather around to make their sacrifices. During this festival the Celts normally wore costumes and tried to tell each other’s fortunes.

Their costumes were normally of animal heads and skins.

Before their celebration started, the Celts “extinguished the fire in their hearts” and after it is all over they “re-lit” that fire from the sacred bonfire to protect them during the winter.

This is how it all started and how we now have what we call Halloween!

Do You Lose Your Mind in Retirement

Talk to most any one over 50 years old and you’ll hear stories about memory glitches – those “senior moments”. Those times spent looking for misplaced keys, trouble recalling names and the ever familiar word that is on the tip of your tongue!

With aging our brain will change. Brain cells die in some people while in others brain structures become smaller. Yet these brain changes may not have an impact on memory. However, while the brain’s physical change doesn’t necessarily relate to memory loss there are changes that do occur in memory function as we age.

The brain processes information slower which affects the rate people can put new information into permanent memory.

With aging we often experience delayed reactions like not being able to recall a familiar word. Research has shown people who have a positive mental outlook tend to show less of a decline in mental function as they age. The adult brain has more plasticity than was previously thought. The brain is capable of making new connections no matter what your age. Moreover, there is evidence of a positive relationship between physical fitness and memory especially those involved in aerobic exercise.

So what can you do to help our memory stay relatively intact as we go through our Age of Fulfillment? The answer is dependent on what you do with yourself.

The good news is you can actively fight these brain busters! One way is to reduce stress and take control of your life. What this entails is doing several things. Start by exercising regularly especially aerobics such as walking, biking, or dancing. It is important to do this for a minimum of 30 minutes three times a week. Remember to add strength training as part of your regimen.

In the February 2003 publication of the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, it states that three key areas of the brain adversely affected by aging show the greatest benefit when a person stays physically fit. Research also has shown that aerobics delivers nutrients, sugar, and oxygen to the brain. By doing this, you may reduce the loss of brain tissue common with aging.

Intellectual stimulation is another key to keeping a sharp mind. Keep your mind active by learning something new. Get enough sleep because too little sleep impairs concentration. A good night sleep will boost your memory after learning something new!

Do mind games such as crossword puzzles, card games and board games – all these tend to help improve your memory. You can also use the computer, read books, go to lectures and concerts. Staying mentally active may even help keep you emotionally healthy and it’s good for self-esteem!

Whatever you do, don’t underestimate the power of your brain – its power to learn, adapt, grow, imagine and create. The time spent in daily exercise and mental gymnastics can yield positive results as you go through your Age of Fulfillment!

Making Relocation to Another City an Adventure

Moving to a new home is an exciting experience. When the move means you will be relocating to a new area, the experience becomes an adventure. There won't just be a new house to settle into, but new roads to navigate, new schools to research, new people to meet, new towns to explore -- a whole new world for you and your family. Then there’s the daunting task of packing and organizing the move. One could get pretty overwhelmed in a short period of time. Below are some suggestions and tips to help make your move stress free and maybe even fun.

Where to start for relocation information?

The Chamber of Commerce can be a great place to start. They can answer your general questions and send you a map of the area. Getting information on things to do in the area can generate excitement about your move and get you motivated for this adventure. Find out what the local newspapers are and start having them delivered to your current home. It's a great way to learn what's going on in your new town and get a feel for the new locale. A newspaper is also a way to check local real estate ads to see what's selling. For kids, there may be information on summer camps, sports teams, tennis or swimming lessons. For adults, there may be information on the local music and theater culture.

If you have children, you will most certainly want to research information on the schools. You can start by going to the school board website for links to individual schools. You may want to find out if the schools in the area are rated by a grading system, and take this into consideration. For instance, public schools in Florida are graded according to how well students have mastered the Sunshine State Standards, measured by the FCAT tests. Another thing to take into consideration is if the schools are part of a "Choice System," as opposed to a neighborhood school system. In this case, you are able to choose a school by registering by a certain date. Some schools have waiting lists so it is best to find out all this information in advance. Once you have narrowed the search down to a few schools, start calling the school guidance offices for specific information on registering your child. This will give you time to gather all the school records & medical records you will need for your move.

Once you have decided on a specific neighborhood, see if there is a neighborhood association. Members of these associations are involved in all aspects of the neighborhood including planning and development. They can be really helpful in providing you with information on everything from education to crime rates and neighborhood watch programs. Many neighborhood associations have websites that you can access, as well as newsletters.

Check out the local YMCA. There are usually lots of activities available to families, such as open swim, fitness classes and even child care. Also look into the local libraries for free seminars, book talks and movie nights for teens. Try to enjoy the learning process. Check out the map, make lists of new places to explore and get your bearings well before you move in.

Where to start for the packing and moving process?

The earlier you start getting ready for your move, the better. Planning ahead and making to-do lists can help make the job of packing up and moving smooth instead of stressful.

This is a great time to get rid of all that extra stuff that has been accumulating over the years. Take a look through the basement, the attic, the garage and each closet. Make a list of the things that you no longer need. Be ruthless. If there are clothes, toys, or books that haven't been used in the recent past, it's time to let them go. Consider having a garage sale or selling items on eBay. Donate clothing and toys to a local shelter. Libraries and schools are always happy to accept books, videos and music CD's. This is a great time to declutter and lighten your load.

As soon as you know your approximate moving date, start calling moving companies. It's always a good idea to get estimates from two or three companies. Try to get referrals from friends and neighbors. If you are a member of AAA, consider using their Consumer's Relocation Service to manage the move. Decide which furniture you will be taking with you. It may cost more to move that old couch than to buy a new one, so consider if something is really worth keeping.

It's never too early to start collecting boxes. Some moving companies offer recycled boxes free of charge. Or, place a request on an on-line trading site such as freecycle.org or craigslist.org for free boxes; you may find someone who is looking to get rid of their boxes. Packing boxes slowly, even one or two a day, will help in the long run. Start by packing the things you can live without for several months. Pile up boxes in the room where they belong and label each box. You might consider renting a storage unit to store the boxes until moving day. This is especially valuable if you are in the process of showing your house while it is listed for sale. The less clutter the better!

By starting to declutter and pack up boxes early on, you will feel productive and in control. Keep up the good work and stay upbeat. Congratulations, it's just the beginning of your new adventure!

Halloween Family Tips and Advice

Adults, parents and their children cherish Halloween so much that some of them even devote their energy a couple months in advance just to make sure they get the most popular costumes, and to organize the best parties.

Halloween is set in the Gregorian calendar every October 31 and is one of the most anticipated holidays for children in which they can get their favorite appetizer: candy. During Halloween, children wear costumes and go door-to-door in their neighborhood, knocking on doors or ringing doorbells while yelling "trick or treat!" The inhabitants of the house, some times dressed up in scary costumes, will then hand out small candies, miniature chocolate bars or other treats.

That reminds me of an episode of the mysterious but still funny detective TV show Monk when his new assistant was closing in on a murderer who tried to poison his wife through a Halloween chocolate bar, creating confusion as they thought some were given the poisoned chocolate bar during their trick or treating.

People enjoying Halloween forget sometimes, like in any other festivity, to party safely and therefore the number of accidents increase this time of year. But on the other hand, it is my pleasure to recognize that there have been increasing interests on safety manners to apply during the Halloween trick-or-treating.

Having said that, I will give you my short Halloween family tips and advice:

- Plan your route and make sure an adult knows where you are going.

- Have an adult accompany you for trick or treating.

- Never go alone, go with a parent or treat in groups.

- Wear reflective clothing so that you can be seen at night.

- Use make-up instead of a mask so that you can see well.

- Take a flashlight.

- Stick to well lit streets.

- Try to finish your trick or treating at 8 p.m.

- Do not enter into a stranger's house nor go to home where front lights are not turned on.

- Always say please and thank you.

- Do not run into the streets.

- Cross streets only at corners, never from between parked cars.

- Do have an adult check your candy before you eat any of it.

- Do not eat candy if the wrapper is partially open or is taped.

Most of all, be safe and have fun!

Fun Kid Birthday Party Ideas Creative Themes

Theme parties are always great fun for any child's birthday party.

Does your child have a favorite movie, book, TV show, favorite character, or maybe your child likes animals or has a favorite sport or past time. Well how about using one of your child's favorites as the theme for their birthday party.

Planning Your Party

If your child is old enough, sit down with them and ask what kind of theme they'd like for their party. Then, keeping your budget in mind, as well as space limitations and preparation time, choose a theme and start making plans.

Once you've decided on a theme for your child's birthday party, you'll find that everything begins to fall right in place.

Kid Birthday Party Invitations

You and your child will have lots of fun putting together a creative invitation for their party.

When wording your invitation, try getting into your theme and have some fun. Use words and phrases that fit your theme.

If you're having a Princess birthday party, you might make it a "Royal Invitation from the King and Queen."

For a Pirate birthday party, write your invitation on a piece of brown paper bag crumpled up to look like old parchment. Draw a map to your house and have "X" mark the spot. Then write something like this, "Aaarrrhh, we be celebratin the birthday of Captain (your child's first and last name) and ye be invited."

Interactive invitations are lots of fun and help to get your invited guests involved in your theme right away.

For a Dinosaur birthday party you can send along a small box with a small plastic dinosaur "buried" in glacial ice (wrapped in cotton). Then the recipient can "dig up" the dinosaur.

For a Princess birthday party you could have your invitation rolled up, tied with a purple ribbon and hand delivered by someone in appropriate costume.

Be creative and have fun with your invitation. Remember, it's the first impression your guests will have of your up-coming party. Get them excited so they can hardly wait!

Kid Birthday Party Decorating Ideas

With your theme in mind, you can keep your decorations simple by using balloons and streamers and by putting pictures on your walls that you've cut from magazines.

Or you can be a little more creative by turning your living room into your theme location.

For a Dinosaur birthday party put blue and white helium filled balloons on your ceiling to form a sky with clouds. Then hang dark brown, light brown, green and orange streamers from the ceiling to the floor to make a jungle. Wrap some of the streamers together to make your jungle thicker.

For a Princess birthday party create a special throne using a chair and decorating it with bright red and purple balloons and streamers. And maybe even use a colorful pillow.

Again, be creative and have fun.

Kid Birthday Party Game Ideas

Most party games can be slightly modified to fit your theme. For a Blue's Clues birthday party Pin the Tail on the Donkey can become "pin the tail on Blue."

For a Princess party, Musical Chairs becomes "The Royal Musical Ball" and you can play appropriate music.

And speaking of music, music that is appropriate to your theme is perfect to use during your games. Simply start a game when your music starts. You can easily find CDs for most movies and TV shows.

Kid Birthday Cakes

There are a lot of great recipes available for theme birthday cakes, or you can easily pick up a frosted cake then add "edible cake toppers" for your theme.

Using edible cake toppers is a great way to create a colorful, professional looking theme cake for your child's birthday.

Kid Birthday Party Food Ideas

If you're serving food or snacks, keep your theme in mind and be creative.

For a Princess birthday party, serve finger sandwiches, candy sushi, royal colored jelly beans, grapes, sparkling apple or grape juice or a "royal punch."

For an Incredibles birthday party, label your food. Ketchup becomes "super sauce", carrot sticks become "energy sticks" and you can even have a mini "hero sandwich."

If you're using an underwater theme like Finding Nemo, serve "peanut butter & jellyfish" sandwiches, Gold Fish crackers and "tuna fish" sandwiches.

Be Creative

Even with a limited budget you can be creative and come up with lots of fun kid birthday party ideas... Put just a little effort into your plans and your child will fondly remember this birthday party for years to come.

And don't forget to take lots of pictures and shoot lots of video of everyone having fun.

Proper Food Storage

Using proper food storage is very important to your health and your family’s health. It is up to you to provide proper storage solutions for every type of food that comes into your home. This is no easy task. If you plan to store large amounts of food, you need to have the room. It is also important to realize that foods go bad quite easily and quickly. Taking the time to find the right solution to your food storage needs can even help you save money.

Purchasing And Storing

It is quite important for you to purchase foods that are in good condition especially if you will have them in your home for a long period of time. This is especially true for foods that will not last for long such as fruits and vegetables that are purchased fresh.

But, you can also package them to keep them lasting longer. For example, fresh produce such as vegetables and fruit can be canned or purchased and placed into a vacuum sealing to keep them fresh much longer.

For meats, it is important to use them within their date or to freeze them. You should freeze them properly without defrosting them more than once to use. You can also use a vacuum sealer to do this work as well.

Having Enough Room

One of the biggest problems that many have when it comes to food storage is that it is hard to find enough room in our kitchen cabinets for the products that we purchase. In order to have enough room, you can think outside the box. Using your fridge and freezer effectively is one thing. You can store canned goods in boxes in a cool location as well. You can add bins or containers to your kitchen as well.

Using proper food storage means keeping everyone happy and healthy!

Household Chores in Half The Time

Household chores aren't hard, nor are they particularly boring - nice to have time to think sometimes! BUT they are time-consuming. These tried and tested tips will cut your 'chores time' in half...

1. Organize:

Start at the top of the house and clear it up! Then allocate places for absolutely everything. Install shelves and cupboards in the bedrooms, and make sure there is enough space for each pile of clothes. Before you go on to the next room, put a label on the front of the shelf in full view of the shorter members of the family. Then there will be no 'But I don't know where it goes' complaints when you ask them to put their stuff away.

Work through the house, re-organizing. You don't have to spend loads of money. I was once obliged to use 'cupboards' made from cardboard boxes. They lasted a short time and the kids were quite happy to put their clothes away in the novelty cupboards.

Shelves are a must in the children's rooms - you'll always be on at them to clear up but at least the little darlings may actually do it if they know where everything goes!

The kitchen has to be organized, no question, or you'll waste tons of time every day, looking for a wooden spoon, moving dishes to fit plates on shelves etc;

2. Health Before Beauty:

Wall to wall carpet harbours germs even the most rigorous hoovering won't destroy. Throw them all out and go for polished wooden floors. Use rugs on cold spots and shake them outside every day or two. Sweep wooden floors gently with a soft broom. Avoid hoovering every day - some hoovers emit a very fine dust into the air through their exhaust. This dust isn't particularly good for the lungs, better the dust underfoot!

A quick shake of a rug and a sweep will take a lot less time than getting out the hoover, doing the biz, wrapping it all up and putting it away aging. And the broom doesn't interfere with the radio!

3. Bye bye bleach:

Do you need shades when you look at your kitchen sink? Chances are the bleach is taking over! Research has proved that those of us who live in a sterile environment have a less efficient immune system than those who slum it a bit! Cut the bleaching by half. And if you sterilise your house for the benefit of guests and their opinions, then be prepared to inform them gracefully that you are building your family's immune systems - and saving the earth a little. Be smug.

4. 90% less ironing:

Ironing or pressing cloth reduces it's lifespan considerably. You may have an outwardly smooth appearance but inside the cloth is a tangled mess of flattened fibres.

As soon as the washing machine has finished it's final spin, hang the washload on an outside washing line, weather permitting. Shake each item before pegging it out, and pull jeans into shape.

Air the washload by folding carefully and putting in an airing or warming cupboard, or hang over radiators.

If there's a delay in hanging out your washing, take it out of the machine and fold it carefully, smoothing and gently pulling each item into shape. Now the moment of truth! Only iron what NEEDS to be ironed. Towels, sheets, jumpers, underwear and overalls probably don't need ironing.

Smoothing and folding damp washing eliminates lots of creases, and everything that doesn't get a fibre crushing treatment will live a lot longer!

5. Designer Leftovers:

Try these delicious family dishes from leftovers, saving time in the kitchen, oh, and money too. Note: Leftovers should be consumed or discarded within 24 hours.

Bake too many jacket potatoes, cool and refrigerate leftovers overnight. Cooking a whole tray of potatoes takes no longer than cooking one or two. Use your leftover jacket potatoes in different ways:

-slice and fry in hot olive oil, adding some mixed herbs or cumin spice to the oil.

-peel, dice and add to an omelette with cheese and ham

-peel and make a rough potato salad with a little tinned sweet corn, tuna and chopped onion.

Double the rice quantity, cool, cover and refrigerate leftovers overnight. Using leftover rice:

- make a plain omelette and cut into pieces. Set aside. Stir fry leftover rice and add a little soy sauce for flavour, then gently stir in omelette. Serve hot.

-mix cold rice with fresh raw chopped vegetables. Chill for 30 minutes before serving.

-Fry in olive or nut oil a finely chopped onion, tomato, green pepper and a few sliced mushrooms. Add rice to pan and stir fry gently, until hot right through.

Cook a bigger chicken than you need then hide the leftovers in the fridge. Try these ideas for the next day's meal..

-cut chicken into pieces, cover with a curry sauce and bake thoroughly in a hot oven.

-mix cut-up chicken with a finely chopped onion and stir in a half mayo half natural yoghurt dressing. Add a few walnuts for a special treat. Chill before serving.

-Stir fry chicken with a few vegetables and mix into a bowl of hot noodles. Serve with an oriental style sauce.

Always make sure re-heated food is piping hot before serving.

With a little careful planning in the kitchen, a part of tomorrow's dinner will always be taken care of today!

Living in Your Home May be Dangerous to Your Health

The hidden toxins in your home are quite harmful as they leak into the air and contact your skin. This is scarey when you hear scientists admitting that we don't know for sure how bad these chemicals are for you. In fact, most of the 18,000 chemicals that are produced each year have never been tested by humans. Many of these toxins are lurking just behind your front door. You may be surprised to hear, but it is true, that the air inside your home can be more polluted than what's outside your home, even if you live in a busy urban area. This is because modern building materials, furniture, everyday cleaning solutions and other household products release chemicals that linger in the still air of a well-insulated home.

So, you say you'll be vigilant... Well, chemicals can still enter your home in unexpected ways. For instance, while labels advise us to use paint strippers, adhesive removers and spray paints in well-ventilated areas, gases can still leak out of the closed containers. These products are known to contain methylene chloride which causes cancer in animals.

Carbon monoxide and benzene are known human carcinogens that are present in auto exhaust. These chemicals can leak from an attached garage right through porous drywall and into the house.

The glues, paints and adhesives holding your house together can pollute the air, too. New construction gives off gases that can irritate the eyes, nose and throat.

Pressed-wood products emit formaldehyde, which at elevated levels can cause wheezing in people with asthma. Thankfully, there are usually no permanent effects.

Plug-in air fresheners release a steady stream of pleasantly scented formaldehyde into your home.

Scientists admit that they are uncertain as to how much exposure, or how long, is necessary for many of these chemicals to harm your health. This is especially true since some people are more sensitive than others. For instance, those persons who have asthma or pulmonary conditions often react more strongly. Some symptoms that you want to pay special attention to include feeling nauseous, weak, or always sneezing. If you're concerned about these things, but lacking funding, it is nice to know that you don't have to gut your house to make it healthier. Simply use air cleaners, clean your ducts, and keep the windows open so that fresh air can flush out toxic chemicals. However, your biggest problem may be with the harsh chemicals that are found in cleaning products.

Some toxins arrive incognito, in products without ingredient labels. For instance, did you know that the flame-retardant chemicals that are used in thousands of household appliances and textiles can leach out into your home? Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, build up in your body over a lifetime. In lab animals, they've been shown to disrupt thyroid hormone balance and alter brain development. Scientists have detected them in women's breast milk, human hair and fat cells. Several states are actually phasing 2 of these toxins out. The third 1 shouldn't be far behind in also being phased out. There are less-toxic flame retardants, as well as chemicals that are bonded to products so they don't leach out, available for use.

Convenience also comes at a cost. Did you know that nonstick and stain-resistant coatings typically contain perfluorochemicals, or PFCs? They're found in Teflon, Scotchguard, Stainmaster and Gore-Tex. They're found in cookware, clothing, wallpaper, paint and food packaging. They're also found in us. This is scarey when you consider that in animals they cause cancer, birth defects and developmental problems, as well as high cholesterol. These chemicals are turning up in unexpected places, including the water supplies of cities with no large-scale commercial use. This could be due to 1 known source: cooking. (Heating Teflon-coated pans to high temperatures releases the fumes that kill pet birds and sicken people temporarily.)

Even plastic baby products aren't necessarily safe. Phthalates are found in some soft vinyl toys, as well as in cosmetics such as nail polish and hair spray. Studies have already proven that infant boys who are born to mothers that have been exposed to phthalates had a higher chance of genital abnormalities. Phthalates are found in baby bottles, food storage containers and water bottles. It's also used in resins that coat the inside of food cans and in dental sealants for children. At low doses, this chemical causes reproductive abnormalities in lab animals. This is because this chemical acts like the estrogen that can be found in birth control pills. When heated, more of this chemical will actually leak into your food. Some studies have detected leaching even at room temperatures. You also should take note that heavily scratched or worn plastic degrades faster.

The long-term health effects of small doses of chemicals are difficult to study since they don't always show up in blood tests, and if they do, effects might take decades to develop. Animal studies don't necessarily translate into equivalent effects on human health either. This is why we urgently need more data. The hard thing is sometimes the data come too late. The other challenge is that there are definite trade-offs in choosing to use these materials (ie cooking your eggs in a nonstick pan means you can use less artery-clogging oil; extra-strength cleaners make housework go faster; plastic baby bottles don't break). A lot of these chemicals truly have made it more tolerable to live in our environment. Nevertheless, we should always approach their use with caution. Where clear, better alternatives exist, we need to choose the alternatives.

Relationships Five Little Things You Can Do to Cultivate a Peaceful and Happy Home Life

Today's typical couple is busier than ever. Whether you're working overtime, shlepping the kids around, traveling or fulfilling social obligations, life at home can be a chaotic scene. But is this any excuse to let good-old-fashioned manners and consideration go out the window? Of course not. A peaceful and loving home starts by showing respect and courtesy to your spouse and children. Here are five little reminders to keep you on good behavior!

1. Remember your manners.

Kindness and consideration go a long way. Don't interrupt when another family member is speaking. Make please, thank you, may I, and excuse me part of your daily repetoire. Apologize if you've accidentally hurt someone's feelings. Give others the benefit of the doubt.

2. Eat meals together.

Sure, life on the run has everyone grabbing a quick meal when they can, but quality time is the key ingredient to a happy family life. Even if it's just once a week, schedule a day when everyone can sit down together at the table and enjoy a home-cooked dinner and some good conversation.

3. Be a unified parental front.

If Mom and Dad can't agree on what the rules are, let alone enforce them, you can be sure that your kids will have the upper hand and the two of you will be left feeling ineffective and resentful of each other. Lay down the law and present yourselves as a Unified Parental Front!

4. Listen to each other.

Sure, Moms and Dads often know best, but that doesn't mean shutting your mind to what your children have to say. Listen to each other with open hearts and minds, and start your children on the path to positive communication and great relationships.

5. Never go to bed angry.

Sure, disagreements happen from time to time, but there is no better indicator of a secure and loving home than agreeing to put differences aside when the lights go out each night. Explain to your children that even though you and your spouse don't always see eye to eye, it doesn't mean you don't love each other. Same goes for the kids!

Now more than ever before, we must instill solid family values in our children. The best way to teach them to respect others is to show respect for each other in our own homes.

Every Family Should Have a Website

Before the Internet the best ways to stay connected with your family and friends, was by telephone, family reunions, and the Christmas newsletter, which recapped the year. This isn’t necessarily how it needs to be these days.

Today in this world of instant everything, your family and friends shouldn’t have to wait to hear that Samantha went on her first date, and that Bobby caught his first fish in that annual newsletter. You can publish this information on your own family website.

I know what your thinking, I don’t need a website to tell Grandma that Bobby caught a fish, I can call her on the phone, or better yet I can send her an email, with a picture of Bobby and little Nemo. Everyone, even Grandma has email these days and I find it very convenient and thoughtless to send out an email to everyone.

Yes, I agree email is very convenient and anyone can get a free account these days. But lets think about that picture you attached in the message, what happens to that priceless picture of Bobby holding up his fishing pole with a big proud smile on his face and the look of shock in Nemo’s. That picture although very memorable at first glance, gets filed away in someone’s inbox and forgotten or worse deleted.

Now imagine storing that picture on your family website, your own personal online photo album (known as a gallery). You know after a while of uploading pictures to your family website, you now have a family history which you can go back to and enjoy forever. You don’t have to worry about losing all of your photos in a fire or if Fido decides to eat those pictures like he did with your homework in sixth grade.

Family website are not just about pictures but also about stories and communication. Adding a daily journal (known as a blog) will keep everyone up to date on the latest and greatest accomplishments of Samantha and Bobby which you did not happen to capture with your digital camera. What is great about Blogs are that after you tell everyone about how Samantha made you place that “Honor Student of the Week” sticker on your brand new mini-van, your friends can make fun of the fact that you actually bought a mini-van in the comments section for that post.

Communication is also a valuable asset of a family website. Along with the benefits of having giving Samantha and Bobby their own email address, which by the way you can manage, you can also give Grandma and Uncle Fred their own email addresses also. There really is no reason why the whole family cannot have an email address like bobby@yourlastname.com or similar.

Although email is a great way to communicate there are also other ways. You can set-up a secure or password protected calendar, which could be public or private. You can set-up everyone you want with their personal calendar and have them all sync into a main family calendar. Imagine your spouse keeping track of the kids’ appointments so you can just glance at today and know you have to pick up Bobby from his new anglers meeting at 5:30.

Our Familys New Motto No More Excuses

Up until a couple weeks ago, our family always had an excuse not to volunteer our time. There always seemed to be a soccer game, family commitment, work obligation, or birthday party to get in the way of us spending our Saturday mornings volunteering our time to help others. Well no longer, we have adopted a new family motto, “No More Excuses”, and this past Saturday we put it to the test.

It was a dreary cold morning and all of us were tired from a long week of work and school. When the time came to get out of bed at 7 a.m. and go volunteer our help delivering food to the elderly any previous enthusiasm we had suddenly faded away. We wasted no time in coming up with a lot of reasons not to go like “we’re tired”, “our beds are warm”, “it’s cold outside”, “we just want to hang with you” and the list continued. So after my morning cry of “No More Excuses!”, I pulled them from bed, fed them a warm breakfast, packed them in our new gas filled minivan, and sped off to our destination. I tuned the grumbles from the back seat out and continued to cheerfully cry “No more excuses!”, “You’ll love this, trust me!”, “You’ll feel so good when you’re done!” all the way to our church. At church we met up with some other families who looked just as enthused as us to be there at 8:30 a.m. on a cold dreary Saturday morning and all of us loaded into the van and off we went. It wasn’t long before we started talking about all the great things in our lives and all of our past volunteer experiences and suddenly we were a little more enthused. After arriving at the charity headquarters, we were quickly put to work delivering food to low income elderly where we were greeted with smiles of hello, cries of happiness, and thanks filled with gratefulness. Suddenly our nice warm beds of a couple hours ago didn’t seem so important and we ended our day of volunteering by getting just as much out of it as those we helped.

So the next time your family has the opportunity to volunteer, what will be your excuse? Remember, your kids will thank you for the little things later.

Wacky Spiders A Fun Halloween Craft for Kids

This is one of our favorite Halloween crafts for kids, and is very quick and simple as well as a good way to practice cutting skills with little kids. Older kids can let their imaginations take over and create some really wacky spiders!

You will need:

Black paper

Scissors

Glue or sticky-tape

Googly eyes (optional) or scraps of paper and pens

Instructions:

Cut a rectangle of paper approximately 3 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Fold the short side down about an inch to make a crease, then open up again.

With the crease horizontal, cut the paper up to the crease to create the spider's 8 legs.

NB: You can show the children how to make the first cut in the middle, dividing the area below the crease into 2 halves. Then show them how to divide each half again to make quarters, then the quarters to make eighths. You may want to draw lines for younger children to practice cutting on.

Now wrap the spider around the child's finger and fasten with sticky-tape or glue. Remove and decorate - either with scraps of paper or with googly eyes. Put back on the finger and bend the legs into shape or curl them around a pencil.

Variations:

Hang the spiders up! Simply cut a length of black yarn (wool) and attach inside the head of the spider with a small piece of sticky-tape.

Make smaller versions of these spiders to decorate the ends of Halloween pencils.

Wrap small spiders around straws to decorate your Halloween table! Make some bigger spiders and scatter them around the table too.

Cut a small slit on either side of the spider's head and insert a name card to turn these spiders into spooky place markers!

The Long World Of Vacuum Cleaners

Did you know that the vacuum cleaner is one of the most not understood tools that are within the home? You use one, probably, at least once a week. Someone in your home does, anyway. The carpets and the floors need to be kept clean. And, to do this we use an effective vacuum cleaner to do the work for us. But, not everyone is doing as good of a job as they could be. The secret to having a clean home…that is properly vacuumed…is to purchase the right vacuum, use it right, and then to take proper care of it afterwards.

If more people took these steps seriously, there would be much less dirt and dust within our homes. Consider this. The first time that you took your vacuum out of its box and used in on your carpet, were you amazed at the amount of dirt it pulled out in just a few seconds? The fact of the matter is that you can count on vacuums to perform like this time and time again when you take care of them the right way. Problem is, though, most people don’t and they find themselves replacing their vacuum cleaners far more often then they need to. This is costly and simply a waste.

Instead, think about using a vacuum cleaner the way it was supposed to be used. If you are not sure of the right way, believe it or not, you have the information that you need at your fingertips. Yes, your owner’s manual is full of the proper way to use your vacuum cleaners. And, you will not believe this but they will also tell you just what you need to do to properly clean and maintain it as well so that it keeps working for you time and time again.

Pole Barns Eco Friendly and Simplistic

Building a pole barn has become a much easier task today. With tons of available ready-to-use plans and blueprints, a handy homeowner can build not only a pole barn of two or even six horse stalls, but also add convenient sheds for tractors, feed storage or shelters. The plans can be used to build other kinds of pole buildings, including workshops, storage barns or garages. Simplicity, cost-cutting and durability are the main reasons why people still use poles, the oldest construction technique, to create simple buildings.

Poles have been used for centuries to raise huts and shelters all over the world. Poles rooted in earth forming a frame for the covering material, be it animal skin, wood or metal, provided enough warmth and protection, and could be built very quickly from whatever material was available. To build pole barns, people still use this technique, which hasn’t changed much over the years. The materials have changed though, and today pole barns are covered with aluminum, steel and other durable lightweight materials, with insulation and sometimes wooden or brick facades.

Pole barns are becoming more and more popular because they allow the building of reliable shelter for animals or storage without money-consuming earth excavation, concrete foundations and general site disruption.

The cheapest way to start building a pole barn is with a pole foundation. Pole foundation is actually a pole that doubles as a framing member. Posts or poles are inserted deep into ground so they can bear a lot of pressure, sometimes as deep as 10ft. But that’s almost all digging for the foundation that a pole barn builder can expect. The pressure is distributed evenly around the pole, and the construction becomes very stable and durable. The builder can dig the holes himself or using a power auger. The poles are secured by a small amount of concrete poured into the holes, saving money and labor, as full concrete foundations can be somewhat expensive.

The pole foundation gives the construction a lot of flexibility. A pole barn with pole foundation can be raised virtually anywhere, even in places where a traditional concrete foundation is not possible, for example, on a steep hillside or wooded area. Thanks to the pole foundation, a pole barn can be built very quickly without expensive ground excavation. Even coastal, earthquake and mountain areas are suitable for building pole barns and sheds. This way, pole barns leave the best land for raising crops, preserving the natural environment and are generally more environmentally friendly with their minimal construction techniques.

Another advantage to pole barns is that you don’t have to make them visually perfect and “manicured”. You can use cheap galvanized steel for the roof and wood sidings, making the whole project very affordable. The only thing that is not worth skimping on, according to experienced builders, are storm clips. These are a valuable investment considering storms and hurricanes are hitting more and more often. Trusses also need to be of good quality as these parts of pole building construction will carry significant weight.

Pole barns and other pole buildings will cost somewhere in the area of $3,000 and upwards, depending on the size and materials available in your particular area. With simple instructions and plans, these buildings can be raised in no time, even if you don’t have strong building experience.

More Options Socks For Comfort and Self Expression

Next time you go shopping, don't just automatically reach for the standard package of white cotton sports, or brown dress socks. Today, you can think about what you want to say with your socks, how you want them to feel, and most importantly, what role they will play in your comfort level.

Some of us are warm fuzzy types, while others prefer the slick lines of a silk pinstripe. For all tastes there is now something interesting and personal in today's sock brands.

First of all, it's important to realize that there are many different materials that socks are made of - from the natural to the synthetic - and they will each give you a different feel and will be worn for different purposes.

* Cotton. Socks make from cotton have that natural feel and can either be worn in their natural color, or dyed to give a variety. Many athletic socks are made from this fiber.

* Wool. If you live in a cold climate, then you understand the absolute luxury of a wool sock. This fiber is ideal for keeping your feet warm and toasty.

* Nylon. This synthetic fiber allows a sock to stretch without compromising its durability. It is mostly used for dress socks and other special occasion socks.

* Elastic. If you've ever experienced a sock that simply won't stay up, then you understand the special role that elastic can play. Placed around the top of the sock, it will keep it from slipping down your leg. Lycra socks work with this principle and are designed to hold to you better.

* Silk. The ultimate in luxury, silk socks are generally worn for business or dressier occasions.

Now you know what socks are made from, have a look at the major styles that they come in.

Dress Socks

Usually made from synthetic fibers, dress socks are generally made in typical colors such as black, brown, gray, white and navy blue. You can buy them with ribs, sheer, or a thicker style mixed with cotton. They almost all have an elastic band at the top to prevent slippage.

Sports Socks

Almost all sports socks are made from cotton, but some of them are combined with man-made fibers to increase their durability. They generally come in white, but many have stripes or other designs. You can choose between thicknesses, depending on the type of sport you are wearing.

Crew Socks

Crew socks come in full size (to stop half-way up the calf) or quarter crew, which cover just above your ankle. They usually have ribbed tops that are fitted with elastic to keep them up during play or athletic activities. They can be natural or bleached white with rings of colors around the top. These socks are the most popular and are worn with just about anything, from shorts, jeans to work-out clothes.

Fun Socks

Socks aren't just about durability and comfort-they're also about style. It's possible to get socks suited to your personality by choosing different colors, designs or even ones with photos and cartoons on them. In addition, if you really want to have some fun, try wearing the toe socks that have individual pockets for each of your ten toes-sure to keep you warm in the winter and start a few conversations!

There you have it - enough information to buy socks with confidence. Perhaps its time for you to experiment a little?

Boost Your Childs Brainpower with Sudoku

In less than a year the Sudoku bug has infected huge numbers of the UK population, and it is fast spreading across the world! Why has a simple logic puzzle become so popular, and how can your kids benefit?

Sudoku puzzles were first published in the US in the 1970s and are sometimes known as "Number Squares". They have been popular for many years in Japan, where the name "Sudoku" (meaning "single number") was coined. The current craze was started late in 2004 when a UK newspaper started publishing the puzzles. Within weeks the puzzles were picked up in other newspapers and Sudoku became the pastime of choice for commuters, parents – and even kids!

From a parent’s point of view, Sudoku puzzles are perfect for long journeys, waiting rooms, and rainy afternoons. They are being found more and more in the classroom as teachers wake up to their benefits and use them as time-fillers for children who finish early, as whole class activity, or as "homework". Indeed, the UK government-produced Teachers magazine has recommended that Sudoku puzzles are used in the classroom as brain exercise!

As well as developing your child's logic and reasoning skills and concentration, Sudoku puzzles, if done at the right level, build your child's confidence. Children of all abilities enjoy the challenge of a Sudoku puzzle, if the puzzle is age-appropriate. Bear in mind that many of the puzzles published in newspapers are too difficult for younger children, so it is worth seeking out puzzles made especially for kids. Children as young as five years old can try the 4x4 grids, then build up to the 6x6 grids and finally the traditional 9x9 grid.

Why are Sudoku so appealing? Firstly, although Sudoku grids usually use numbers, your child does not need mathematical skills to solve the puzzles – only logic. Using logical reasoning appropriate to his/her age, your child decides how to place numbers into a Sudoku grid. There is only one correct answer for each puzzle, no guessing is necessary, and the rules are easy to learn. The more puzzles you do, the better you become. Each puzzle typically takes a child about 20-30 minutes to complete, and gives them a real sense of satisfaction when finished!

7 Ways a Home Air Purifier Will Help You Save Money

Although the initial purchase of a home air purifier or purification system will set you back more than the cost of a feather duster, the long-term monetary benefits are significant. We’ve taken a look at 7 ways that buying and installing an efficient air cleaner will actually help you put more money in the bank!

1) You’ll save on cleaning costs

How much do you spend in a month on cleaning supplies? I’m talking about soap, detergent, sponges, mops, dusters, disinfectant wipes, and so on. It all adds up, right? But what if your house didn’t get quite so dirty quite so fast? Let’s say you didn’t have to dust weekly. As a result, you wouldn’t have to buy as many replaceable duster parts, a savings of approximately $5 per month. That $5 may not seem like much, but it adds up, too - $60 per year. And that’s just on dusting supplies! Buying an air purifier is a fairly large expense right now, but you’ll make your money back, and then some, in the long-term.

2) It’s cheaper than a maid

Do you have a housekeeper? If so, how much do you pay him or her? Any way you cut it, cleaning services are not cheap. Having an air purification system in your home is like having a maid constantly rotating through your rooms, dusting, sweeping, and vacuuming, but at a much lower "per-hour" rate!

3) You’ll save valuable time

Okay, so this "cost-saver" is actually a timesaver. Sure, you could spend hours a day vacuuming, dusting, polishing, and sweeping, but wouldn’t you rather let your air cleaner take care of all of the chores for you? The fact is, all the dust that gathers on top of shelves and windowsills starts out as airborne contaminants - if your air purifier sucks it out of the air, it will never settle and create unsightly dirty conditions. Of course, you’ll have to sweep and vacuum from time to time, because no air purifier can keep your home 100% dust-free all of the time. But a high-quality machine will certainly cut down on your cleaning time dramatically.

4) Your interior design budget will shrink

Have you noticed how dust can make your furniture grey and dull, or how cigarette smoke makes your wallpaper dingy? Indoor dirt and airborne contaminants don’t just create a temporary nuisance - they can permanently damage your home. Installing an air purifier keeps you healthier, but it also keeps your furniture, wallpaper, and curtains cleaner and fresher, which means you can keep them longer.

5) You can stop buying OTC allergy medication

If you and/or anyone in your family is one of the millions of Americans who suffer from indoor allergies, you already know how costly OTC allergy medications can be. And recently, some prominent brands have switched from OTC to prescription-only, adding to the financial burden. Now what if you could attack the problem at its source - reducing the allergens in your home? That’s exactly what air purifiers do, and the end result is that you and your family will breathe easier, even with less medication.

6) You’ll avoid serious (potentially fatal) health problems

In this country, unfortunately, people seem to have the "I’ll pay for it later" mentality - they smoke the cigarettes and put off worrying about the consequences until years after the fact. Don’t play Russian roulette with your health, especially when you can take steps now to preserve your wellbeing in the future. Dirt, dust, grime and debris in your air can lead to asthma, lung ailments and other serious physical illnesses. Living in a cleaner environment will keep your body purer - consider an air purifier a necessity just like diet and exercise.

7) You’ll save on medical bills

Ignoring the airborne contaminants in your home is not just dangerous to your health, it’s also financially risky. Even with insurance, medical expenses are high, and they’re getting higher. Thankfully, with an air cleaner in your home you will cut down on the amount of indoor pollution, lowering your risk of developing related illnesses. This will keep your medical expenses low in the long-run.

For all these reasons, buying a high-quality air purifier can be not just a smart choice but also a financially rewarding one!

Baby Shower Gift Tips

If you are planning a baby shower or going to be joining one; I have a few tips I would like to share with you.

A Diaper Cake is very easy to make and a great all in one gift.

To begin making the cake, you start by rolling diapers and securing each diaper with a rubber band. Stand the diapers up around a paper towel tube. Secure the diapers by tying ribbon, yarn or string around the first row of diapers. Next add a second row around the first the same way. Repeat these steps until you have the desired amount of rows.

For the second cake layer, roll more diapers and attach around the tube just as you did the first layer. Also, do the same for the third layer of the diaper cake. Once you finish each row, you could wrap a thicker type of ribbon around each layer. This will help keep the layers secure.

Now, you can add baby items like rattlers, pacifiers, teething rings, socks or anything a baby may need into the ribbon around the cake. You could also place a teddy bear or some type of stuffed animal on the top. You could even take small soaps wrapped in ribbon and secure them around.

The perfect gift!!

How about a "baby themed" gift basket? I made a gift basket one year for my sister-in-law and she loved it. I simply took a huge white wicker basket and stuffed it with all kinds of goodies. I included towels, washcloths, socks, boxed cereal, bottles, stuffed animals, one of my handmade picture frames, two cross stitch burp cloths and whatever else I could fit in the basket.

A cute centerpiece would be a decorative can filled with goodies or a big plastic baby bottle. You could decorate the can with scrapbook paper, clip art and pictures printed from your computer. You could add all kinds of little goodies into these.

Don’t forget about Mom. I’m sure she could use a "relaxation" gift. Fill a basket with a soothing CD, candles (maybe Lavender scented), a bath pillow, a bath set, eye mask, a good book or anything that Mommy could use for a time out.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these tips.

Debunking a Myth About Spanking Children in America

Did you know that the percentage of parents who believe spanking is necessary has dropped from 94% in 1968 to 55% in 1999? Yet, the incidence of parents who generally spank their toddlers remains at about 94%?

In Proverbs 13:24 of the Old Testament, we read, “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” This scripture has often been used by parents to defend their position of thinking spanking is necessary to discipline children. When you look up the original interpretation of the Hebrew word for ‘rod’, it not only means to strike or hit; it also means correction. The interpretation for the word ‘discipline’ means instruction. In other words, discipline is supposed to instruct or teach our children how to make better choices so they can become successful as they grow older. I’m going to share with you some research findings concerning a myth about spanking and then follow up with some questions to ask yourself about spanking the next time you think a child may need it.

A popular myth concerning spanking American children today is that it works when other methods fail. To examine the effectiveness of spanking, you need to look at a child’s behavior changes over three time periods: (1) The Immediate situation, (2)The short run ( next few hours or days), and (3) The long run (months or years).

In looking at immediate-situation effectiveness, a study was done with parents of school age children. The researchers wanted to know if spanking was effective for when children did not stay in their time-out place. They compared spanking with another method called the escape barrier method. The findings showed on an average, it took 8.3 spankings to get the children to stay in their time-out place. The other method worked as well, which shows that repetition and consistency cause changes in behavior; not necessarily the spanking.

A study done in 1988 showed spanking does not teach a lesson with toddlers. 1,002 mothers were asked what was the last misbehavior for which they spanked their child. They were then asked if they had previously spanked for that misbehavior. 73% said yes; indicating spanking did not have a high success rate.

If you look to see what behavior changes occur from spanking over the short run, which is anywhere from a few hours to a few days, there is evidence which shows that spanking will, on the average, stop misbehavior; at least for the moment.

When you spank a child, you create something else that interferes with the effectiveness of spanking being used for correction and control. Spanking gets in the way with a child’s ability to think. Being slapped or spanked is a frightening and threatening event that arouses strong emotions such as humiliation, sadness or anger. When a child (or adult for that matter) is upset, angry or scared, the limbic part of the brain is engaged. This part, which I call the lizard part of the brain, has no thinking abilities; it merely reacts. A child’s reaction to being spanked is fear. When this happens, the child moves to the lizard part of the brain and is unable to think or process things with the parent. Therefore, the child cannot learn from the experience from a mental point of view. Because spanking does not provide an explanation of the problem, the child doesn’t necessarily learn what he or she did to create the punishment.

Research evidence also indicates spanking is less effective in the long run as well. Why? (1) It teaches a child to avoid misbehavior if a parent is watching. If the child is only good when the parent is around, the child hasn’t developed moral values. (2) This does not promote a child’s internal controls. (3) It weakens the parent-child bond because it instills fear within the child, and (4) It doesn’t help the child develop cognitive and social skills; child doesn’t develop conflict resolution skills. What’s the alternative?

According to Dr. Phil, there are three questions to ask yourself before spanking a child:
1. Does spanking calm the child down? Does it put your child into the thinking part of the brain or does it keep him or her in the lizard part?
2. What does your child learn by being hit? It tells your child violence is acceptable and that it’s ok to react when you get mad.
3. Is it working for the long-term? Spanking doesn’t help your child learn from his or her bad choices; it doesn’t get the child to figure out what she or he did wrong or how to keep from doing it again Research findings also support the idea that the more effective form of discipline, which is to teach the child, is some form of reason/explanation used with non-corporal punishment. This could be the use of natural consequences which place the units of concern on the child instead of the parent. In reality, spanking does not necessarily work when other methods fail. Children will learn best when they are given explanations and natural consequences.

Start with a Cleaning List and Give Your Home a Shine

House cleaning whilst a chore can be made fun if you organize and and you undertake the job systematically. A really easy approach is to create a house cleaning list so you know just what needs to be done, where to start and how to do it.

Prioritize your house cleaning list for the tasks of the day with a description besides each item with an estimated time to complete. So for example your first item could be "Clean Windows", start at 9am and expected time 2 hours.

As your list develops it will help you set up priorities, with the most important house cleaning tasks first, in that way if you are unable to finish your daily house cleaning list it is likely the most important house cleaning task have been completed.

The list will also act as a guide clearly showing which house cleaning tasks have been completed and also act as an encouragement as you cross each house cleaning task off the list.

If you are lucky enough to have assistance when house cleaning their names should be written against each activity too. That way there is no confusion or any chance of doing the same house cleaning chore twice.

Maintaining a house cleaning list will enable your house cleaning exercise to carry on smoothly if you are ever unable to carry it out as there is a clear plan to follow along with average times and a daily routine.

Compiling your house cleaning list is not at all difficult, begin with the date at the top and write down all the activities on the left hand side. Against the activities, you should note a starting time and the average time to complete.

Another benefit of compiling a household cleaning list is that you can also specify the cleaning products needed for each activity, this list them becomes a stock list and by referring to it on a regular basis you can ensure that supplies are always adequate. This will also aid others in completing the tasks as they will now know what tasks to do, when to do them and roughly how long each will take and in addition the products you normally use and where to find them.

The cleaning checklist would cover all the important areas of the home which includes the kitchen, bathroom, windows, furniture and the floors but would probably cover every room as well.

For each area it would be wise to break the list into sub sections so for the kitchen that would include the cabinets, floors, windows, shelves and and appliances and of course include the refrigerator. The bathroom cleaning list would contain the window, the shower rail, the sink and the faucet in addition to the floor.

When it comes to the windows, be mindful of the sills, the blinds and the curtains as each requires their own special care. Furniture deserves a lot of attention, include the polishing, upholstery and don't forget the space under the sofa. and finally the floor checklist should include mopping, stain removing and carpet vacuum cleaning.

A household cleaning list is your first step towards a successful reconditioning of the home, prepare it in advance and you will find house cleaning becomes so much easier.

Kitchen Scraps

Kitchens have evolved in recent years they are now so much more than just a place to prepare food. If your home is your palace then the kitchen is king, providing a major social gathering point for the household.

You can never underestimate the importance of functional kitchens that look good as well. Research conducted by Real Estate companies has shown that kitchens are viewed as one of the most important features by potential purchasers. Therefore, any improvements are likely to add more value to your home.

Remodeling your kitchen is probably one of the biggest and most expensive renovation projects you are likely to undertake. If you’ve never attempted anything like this before, it can be a bit overwhelming. There are now so many new products, materials and appliances it can difficult to know where to start, what to buy, or more importantly what not to buy.

Before you even think about spending, make sure you set a budget and stick to it. A kitchen remodeling project can cost anything from $5,000 to $30,000 and above. When planning your kitchen, make sure you take into account the lifestyle of the household. There is no point in spending thousands on top of the range cooking appliances if you only cook once a fortnight.

It might seem like an extra expense to begin with, but engaging the services of a kitchen designer can definitely pay off in the long run. Kitchen design is a complex business and there are now so many factors to consider when planning kitchens.

A kitchen designer can help to introduce you to new ideas and products that you might not have considered. They can also help save you money by telling you where to go to get the best deals and trades people who will do a good job.

Cleaning with Hydrogen Peroxide

Cleaning with hydrogen peroxide - also referred to as H2O2 - is one of the easiest ways to make sure that you provide a safer, cleaner space, with lower bacteria levels, but without the risk of the toxicity that is sometimes associated with cleaners. By cleaning with hydrogen peroxide, you not only protect the health of your employees and the other building users, but you also help to reduce the damage that is done to the environment.

The cleaning industry in America is taking an important turn towards providing effective, safe cleaning that also remains environmentally friendly. It has been predicted by such experts as the president of EnvirOx, that environmentally friendly products will comprise the majority of cleaning products within 10 years time. Though not to the point of exclusivity, this will mean that cleaning with hydrogen peroxide will comprise a substantial part of this movement.

Today's ideal choices for cleaning involve using oxygen cleaners, which are formulations of hydrogen peroxide and a type of solvent, which may include something natural - for example, citrus or d-limonene (the major component of the oil extracted from citrus rind) or another type of degreasing surfactant.

Using hydrogen peroxide products are considered the elite option for cleaning because of their ability to effectively and successfully break down a stain from the molecular level. However, unlike toxic cleaners, oxygen cleaners are more environmentally desirable because when the hydrogen peroxide dissipates, the results are simple water and oxygen; neither of which has a negative impact on the environment.

This also means that another plus that you will experience when cleaning with hydrogen peroxide is that it works extremely well for cleaning and sanitizing countertops, and other surfaces that may be used for the preparation of food. This includes cutting boards made of woods and plastics.

Oxygen cleaners are readily available in pre-diluted formulas which are ready to use as multipurpose, multi-surface cleaners, as well as degreasers and stain removers. Moreover, concentrates are available for other lighter and heavier functions.

Cleaning with hydrogen peroxide works best on stains that are protein-based, on carpets, grouting, and on laundry, and work very well as deodorizers. However, petroleum-based stains, such as gum and oils still present a challenge for oxygen cleaners. Also, depending on the pH level of the cleaner, it may not work on hard floors, since it could damage the sealant of the surface.

We recommend products such as those by Core Products Co, which provide spotters, pre-conditioners, and specialty products with a base of hydrogen peroxide. This allows you to experience a high quality, effective product that also provides the important benefit of safer formulas for your employees, the other building users, and the environment, due to the low toxicity of hydrogen peroxide.

If you've ever had children, you can just imagine what a great help this would be to exhausted new parents.

Books for the baby shower.
You can take this theme as far as you want to. From having guests bring books to add to the new arrival's library to carrying the theme into the decorations and refreshments, the limits of your imagination and creativity are the only limits you will encounter with this theme.

Choosing the right baby shower games
Baby shower games can be a great way to break the ice and add some fun and entertainment to your baby shower. When selecting the games to include in your shower, be sure to keep your theme in mind and the sensibilities of your guest of honor.

Here are a few ideas:
Baby Quiz. Ask the grandparents to write down what the parents were like as babies. Have them include vital statistics such as time of birth, height, weight, first tooth, first smile, age when toilet trained, and early indications of personality. Based on that information, make up a quiz about the future parents to hand out to guests. The person with the most correct answers wins a prize.

Guess the Girth.
Check with the guest of honor in advance on this one. Some women may find it a bit too personal, but if she's not shy, it can be a lot of fun. All you need is a ball or two of string. Ask guests to cut a length of string that they think will stretch around the future mom's belly. After everyone has had a turn, the mother-to-be measures and cuts a string that fits her belly. Compare her string to all the guests' pieces of string. The person who was closest wins.

As you can see from just these few ideas, baby showers do not have to be ordinary and boring. If you have been asked to host a baby shower, incorporate some of these and your own ideas to create a baby shower that will not be forgotten any time soon.

Save Money on Furniture

Buying furniture can be very expensive. After all, next to your house and your car, furniture is one of the priciest things in your home. So any time you can save money, you should! Here are some tips to buying furniture inexpensively.

Look in the Yellow Pages for a furniture wholesaler or a liquidation or discount store. Often, their furniture is as good as the kind you will get in a retail outlet, but usually cheaper because of a minor flaw (and usually you won't notice that flaw!).

You can also buy from a furniture warehouse where the salespeople are paid by commission. Using a number of purchasing tactics you can often get it at a better deal. For example, if you buy a couch, but would really like to own a couch and a chair, ask if you could get a deal if you buy both.

Another good way to save money when you're buying furniture is to go in toward the end of the month. Most retail companies operate on a month by month basis, measuring sales, running promotions, and introducing or winding up furniture lines on a monthly basis. At the end of the month, furniture companies may be closing out a line of furniture they are no longer looking to stock. They may be willing to give you a great deal if it's the last one in the store and they don't want it taking up any more room. As well, since salespeople are often paid by commission or given sales bonuses, at the end of the month they may be looking to put themselves over the top to be eligible for a reward or to make enough money to pay for the mortgage. You can take advantage of this eagerness to make a sale by showing that you want to buy, but you need a deal.

Many large furniture warehouse companies offer an in-store credit card and will give you a discount if you apply for the card when you purchase their furniture. Use this to your advantage: apply for the card, buy the furniture, get a discount, and pay off the card the next day with the money you're going to spend in your furniture anyway.

Another money-saving option is to buy used furniture and get it reupholstered or refinished by a carpenter. Often, the cost of the furniture plus the finishing will still be cheaper than buying new furniture, and you may even be happier with the result since you are able to be more specific in the kind of furniture you're looking for.

Creating a Family Tree

My mother is your grandmother and my sister is your aunt….is this how you teach your kids about your family? How each of us relates to each other and who is a mother to whom? Why not use a family tree to elaborate on how each of us is connected to each other? A family tree is not only exceptionally useful as a teaching tool for kids, but it gives us a whole new perspective in life too. Building a family tree can also be a fun lazy-Sunday-afternoon activity with the kids.

Building a family tree can be simple, depending on the kind of family tree you want to build. An elaborate one will take a much longer time, for example, if you want to cut out pieces of colored paper and pasting them with pictures and short write-ups on the family member. Some people will just draw a family tree and color portions of it into the family tree. Kids love it and even adults will enjoy this simple and calming activity.

Innovation and advancement in technology catches up with our needs too – because there are family tree creators in the form of softwares and computer programs that can help people create their family tree easily. Using these softwares to create a family tree takes only minutes and can be colored in and pasted over too. Using softwares to create a family tree is for people who are not keen on the paper, scissor, glue and goo concept of creating family trees. Don’t be surprised, there ARE people who are not too keen on getting down there with art papers sticking to their clothes! Kids can have fun creating family tree online too or with a software program. It depends on individual preferences, really.

A family tree is nothing more than a bunch of charts that links one person to another in a family. You can start from whichever ancestor you want. For those who are interested in genealogy, you can go as far back as you want. Creating a family tree that is as in-depth as that may require some investigation, interviewing of family members, and also research. If you can’t find your family members or are not in touch with them over some period of time, it may be a little bit more difficult to fill in the blanks in your family tree. However, with tools like www.familysearch.com, www.rootsweb.com, and www.usgenweb.vom, things are much easier than before.

So, go ahead and have some fun creating your family tree now!!

Are You Prepared

Neighborhood Preparation

NOW is the time to share this information with every neighbor and form a neighborhood group that can help each other. Anarchy and riots could break out and law enforcement agencies may be operating sporadically if at all as we have witnessed in New Orleans.

Your first question may be: “What if I don’t know my neighbors?” Well, this would be an excellent way to get to know them. You can go door-to-door inviting them to your house for a meeting. Or if your neighborhood has a meeting room, then reserve that room. If you live in an apartment complex, then reserve your clubhouse. Also some neighborhood associations and apartment complexes have a newsletter. Prepare a notice about your meeting. You might also consider distributing flyers.

The secret to getting people to attend is the old “What’s in it for me?” You need to create something that shows what could happen if the neighborhood is not prepared and how that could have a direct effect on the attendees and their families like they had to learn during Hurricane Katrina.

I don't think that you will have to much trouble convincing them that this could happen to them after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita!

Your second question will probably be: “What do I do at the meeting?” First, I would have nametags and an agenda sheet available for each attendee. Also make sure to have a sign-in sheet that has ENOUGH space for the name, address, phone number, and even e-mail of each attendee. At the same time ask for the following information that will be very important for the directory that is being created:

* Names, addresses/e-mails of EVERY physician, nurse, carpenter, plumber, mechanic, fire fighter, police officer, electrician, builder, physically challenged person, and elderly person in the neighborhood/complex.

* Names and ages of children in each family.

* Locations of each house supplied with gas.

Then I would invite the attendees to serve themselves refreshments and mingle.

After allowing enough time for the attendees to arrive, I would then go around the room asking every attendee to give his/her name and a brief reason that he/she decided to attend the meeting. I would assign someone to keep notes and if feasible I would have a flip chart available. You will want to have someone write out the reasons on the flip chart.

I would then reiterate the reason you have called the meeting especially emphasizing what’s in it for the attendees and their families. The first item on the agenda might be how the neighborhood could set up a buying cooperative for the items that could be helpful doing an emergency i.e. the eight plus hour candles, generators, hand-cranked flashlights and short wave radios, FDA-approved water containers, first aid kits, bulk food, non-hybrid seeds, water purifiers, etc.

This would be an excellent time to form a food cooperative/buying program. Also suggest to the attendees that when they go to the grocery store, buy DOUBLE the amount of canned goods each week until they have at least a six month supply on hand...preferably one year supply. They might consider buying dehydrated/freeze-dried food.

You might check with your local grocery store and see if they will allow you to buy canned goods in cases for your group. We found a local IGA store in Atlanta that was willing to work with us for Y2K preparation. How long will these cans lasts?

In my research for my previous book, I learned that your canned goods have a shelf life of 2-5 years! If you are not sure and would like to be safe, then look on the label and call the 800 number. The person will ask for the code on the can. With this information he/she will be able to tell you when this can was sealed and the average shelf life of the can.

You will also want to consider plans to develop community garden when spring returns. Even if there is food available it could be more expensive than a highflying dotcom stock! Even if nothing happens, a community garden can be a wonderful project for the neighborhood.

Your group should purchase an assortment of Non-Hybrid seeds that can be used for growing food. It is very important they be Non-Hybrid since these are the only seeds you can use from the full-grown plants. The majority of the seeds available today will not grow another crop forcing you to buy more seeds.

The following are some points that gardening expert Bev Kates shared for my first book:

* Research the relative nutritional merits of fruits, vegetables, and grains, which you would like to include in your diet.

* Emphasize those rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, and starches for sustenance.

* Make sure and have a variety of colors, textures, and tastes.

* Include a wide variety of both summer and winter crops.

* Make sure your seeds are disease-resistant, productive strains (also non-hybrid).

* Pack your seeds and spores (mushrooms) in generous quantity in an airtight container.

* Investigate companion planting (which varieties to plant next to each other for maximum productivity and insect and disease resistance).

Now Bev is going to share 2 gardening technique for even the smallest apartment...

* Consider square foot gardening techniques to maximize production in a minimum amount of space.

* Get in the habit of recycling plant waste matter (discarded leaves and stems, vegetable peelings, eggshells, coffee grounds, etc.) in a mulch pile.

You might also consider hydroponics.

Next on the agenda should be water sources. It is very possible that the water source may be contaminated and potentially dangerous water could be flowing in your pipes. Do not under any circumstances drink from the tap during an emergency (it is advisable to even avoid washing with this water).

You are going to need a minimum of one gallon of water for each member of the household per day. This will be used for drinking, cooking, washing your hands, and brushing your teeth. The Red Cross says that you should have at least a three-day supply but I believe very strongly that you should have a 6-month to one-year supply. Witness in New Orleans that they were still finding people in their attics 14 DAYS after Hurricane Katrina!

Your first choice should be a non-electric water purifier. The military and missionaries have used these water purifiers for years. The majority of the water sources these agencies have available are as contaminated as your local cesspool! By using these water purifiers it is possible to remove over 99% of the impurities from the dirtiest water on the Planet. You can create a system where the water collects in plastic garbage bag covered garbage cans. Then you can take that water and run it through the purifier. Most of these purifiers will clean at least 10,000 gallons of water before the filters have to be replaced.

Now, if you do not want to invest in a water purifier, you can check and see if your local grocery has a water vending machine. This will be usually water that has been processed using reverse osmosis, which is the purest water you can get. You will want to start collecting those gallon containers that distilled water comes in or plastic drink bottles. NEVER use the plastic MILK containers as they have the potential of leaving deadly bacteria even after washing in the hottest water. Usually you can get a gallon out of the machine for 25 cents.

I am sure that some of you reading this article may not be able to afford the expense of a water purifier or even the water machine. There is another alternative that will work...

You can also fall back on the old standby of chlorine bleach or iodine for decontaminating your water. The bleach you buy should state on the label that it contains 5.5% sodium chloride. Most times you will use 8 drops of the bleach per gallon. You will want to make sure that you can both TASTE and SMELL the bleach before drinking it. If you are not sure then add another 8 drops. If the water appears to be cloudy then add 16 drops in the beginning. Mix the water thoroughly and let it stand for at least 30 minutes.

In regards to iodine, there are new tablets available that purify the water and also remove the taste of the iodine.

So where are you going to store this water? Your first choice should be the FDA-approved containers that can store from 5 gallons to 55 gallons. You would only want to consider the 55 gallon containers if you plan not to move them.

Your best bet is the five gallon ones. Remember the five-gallon container will last one member of your family five days. You should place the containers on their sides and stack them. You also want to make sure and keep these containers off the floor and away from strong odors i.e. gasoline. The water supply should last from 2-3 years; however, it is a good idea to rotate the containers as you purify using the older water first.

You can use the plastic jugs...NOT MILK JUGS...but they will not last as long as the FDA-approved containers.

There will be emergencies when you will have to take drastic measures. You can usually drink the water from the toilet TANK not the bowl. Or you can drink the water from the hot water heater. You attach a garden hose at the bottom of the hot water heater. Make sure you have turned off the heat first and also drained out the sediment that collects at the bottom of the hot water heater.

You should pass out information that explains what to do as soon as the disaster occurs. Most likely the electricity is going to shut down as predicted in the report. You begin to pull out that supply of candles you bought especially those 8-hour plus ones. Also you have an assortment of flashlights with fresh batteries and even a couple of those flashlights you can hand crank or shake.

Speaking of hand-cranked devices, you also locate your short wave radio that also offers a solar powered backup source. Why short wave? Because these radios offer extra emergency bands that might come in handy at this time. Also if the time of power outage is very long then the news and entertainment on the short wave can take the place of television (unless you have a battery powered one). You might also keep fresh batteries in the kids’ toys and video game units to keep them entertained. Ditto for your laptop or PDA.

If you have gas ranges, dryers, or other appliances IMMEDIATELY go to the source and TURN IT OFF! Every member of the family over twelve years old should know how to turn off the gas at the source which is usually by the street. Why do this? Because there could be a gas break from the disaster and the last thing you want to deal with at this time is a deadly explosion. I would also recommend assigning people at your meeting to act as “back-up” checkers for the entire community in regards to shutting off the gas. This will also immediately get them involved in the project.

Now you should cover the importance of obtaining alternate sources of power. Remind them to purchase a 3-6 month supply of firewood. Keep on hand the store bought starter logs so that you can get the fire going quickly. If you run out of these logs then you can take old newspaper (preferably without color since this can out gas potentially dangerous fumes) and roll them up tightly to create your own logs. Remember to keep on hand both fireproof matches and the disposable lighters.

You then might discuss the signaling system for neighborhood communications that I discussed in my previous book. It is extremely important to able to communicate with your neighbors especially after a natural disaster. The telephone lines will most likely be down.

You will want to develop a rotating schedule where one person is responsible for touring your neighborhood or apartment complex to check on the signaling system. This system is very simple and requires that a family who has an emergency at their home or apartment prominently display a RED ribbon where the “checker” can see it. The “checker” should immediately go to the door and knock LOUDLY and call out. If there is no response then the “checker” should make the decision to enter the house or apartment. Remember, someone may be unconscious and unable to respond; every minute will count. You might ask if this is legal.

I would discuss the feasibility of getting the attendees to agree to sign an agreement authorizing someone to enter a home or apartment after reasonable attempts to get a response are exhausted. Before creating this agreement it would be good to check with an attorney.

Another very important agenda item should be CPR and first aid. You should determine who has had both CPR and first aid instruction. EVERY attendee should have been certified for CPR. If they are not, then one of the first priorities is getting a certified instructor to attend a meeting to teach CPR. EVERY person in the family should attend that meeting from 10 years old to the grand parents!

Let me share a story. When I lived in Atlanta, I had two old spinsters for neighbors named Vera and Sara. Vera worked at the neighborhood McDonalds and learned CPR. One day Vera and Sara were shopping at the mall when Sara collapsed. Vera knew how to perform CPR and saved Sara’s life! What if your child was lying unconscious? Would you know how to administer CPR? Remember, paramedics have to respond to the 911 situation and even with rapid response, the minutes a person is not breathing means more of a chance of permanent brain damage and even death.

There should be at least one person who is also trained in first aid and the neighborhood group should also look into the purchase of a group first like we use.

What follows is VERY important to share with your neighbors. During any emergency situation, valuable personal information could be inaccessible or even destroyed. I shared this “buddy system” in my previous book and I want to make sure you prepare your information program before you have your first meeting.

You will want to choose a TRUSTED out-of-area contact or close relative to create the “buddy system.” You are going to exchange the following very valuable information with them.

* Your name and address
* Your children’s full names and birthdays
* Color of your children’s eyes and hair
* Children’s mother’s and father’s names
* Children’s sex and race
* Children’s heights and weights (make sure and keep this current)
* Children’s scars and birthmarks
* Name, address, phone number/e-mail of your children’s daycare/school and person in charge
* Children’s pediatrician/physician names and phone numbers/e-mail
* Children’s other identifiers (glasses, braces, etc.)
* Children’s fingerprints and current photos
* Name, phone number/e-mail of children’s sitter (keep this current)
* Family physician’s phone number/e-mail
* Blood types of all members
* Social security numbers of all members
* Birth dates of all members
* Home/work phone numbers/e-mail
* List of all special health problems, allergies to medications, and prescriptions of all members
* Attorney’s name and phone number/e-mail
* Your bank, branch, contact person, phone number/e-mail, and checking account numbers
* Your savings account, or Certificate of Deposit number, branch location, and phone number/e-mail
* Your safety deposit box number and location
* Your homeowner’s insurance company, policy number, agent’s phone number/e-mail
* Your life insurance carrier, policy number, agent’s phone number/e-mail

Now you can see why I emphasized a TRUSTED friend or relative. You are going to be sharing a great deal of confidential and important information with this person. Of course, he/she is going to be doing the same.

Also it would be wise to have some of the real vital information in a special emergency packet that is going to be kept by EVERY person in the household. The absolute required information would include the person’s name, address and phone number; the parent’s names, address, phone number(s)/e-mail(s); the person’s birth date; the person’s finger prints and current photo; the person’s blood type and any special medical problems, allergies to medications, and current prescriptions; and most importantly the name, address, phone number(s)/e-mail of the out-of-area contact person or relative.

If one of your children should get separated from you this information should be very valuable to law enforcement agencies.

Family Lineage is a Treasure Hunt

Family lineage is one of the most interesting topics for anyone to discuss because it is unique to each family. Finding everything from royalty to heroes in family lineage is exciting. Having a personal record of family lineage is a great treasure. Recently, the Latter-day Saint church provided Larry King with a copy of his family history during his evening TV show. King commented that although he had received many gifts during his life, he would cherish the gift of his family lineage above all the rest.

How do you find the origin and story of a family name as unique as von Niederhausern der Hoboëken Dans or as common as Jones? There are three major sources for finding information about your family lineage without the help of one of those little kiosks in the mall.

1) Family History Libraries

The easiest way to learn more about your family lineage is to download all the information that has already been compiled. You can do this with the Ancestral File database that is indexed at the world’s largest genealogy library, The Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Downloading your family tree onto a GEDCOM file can help you do research on the ancestors you are most interested in. In order to find as much information on your lineage as possible in the database, you’ll need to gather information about your parents, your grandparents, and your great-grandparents.

2) Internet

Since only a small percentage of genealogy enthusiasts will ever make it to the Salt Lake Valley, the information has been placed online at FamilySearch.org—a non-profit website that helps make vital records available to researchers.

3) Field Research

Field research is not always the most practical method for filling in the gaps of your family lineage. It’s certainly the most time consuming, but it is also often the most rewarding. After exhausting the data that’s already been compiled in indexes, the next step is to do your own research. You can hire an accredited genealogist to do this for you, or you can tackle it yourself. Field research is done by going into census records, birth/death records, marriage records, and anything else that’s available in order to find information on a family.

These are some basic sources of finding information. Certainly, volumes have been compiled on the subject of family lineage, but only recently has a new method of research been revealed—DNA testing. Through DNA, people whose research has hit a roadblock and hasn’t moved for years can conduct a DNA test to either confirm records already obtained, link themselves to someone they believe to be a relative, or determine what ethnicities make up their DNA.

Remember that building a record of your family lineage is a very time-consuming process, but it is extremely rewarding. Through either the help of a professional or your own efforts, family lineage is a treasure worth discovering.
